Epic 3-day Finger lakes road trip itinerary from New Jersey

When people think of New York, it’s easy to imagine the bustling streets of New York City. While NYC certainly holds a special place in my heart, there’s so much more to explore in the state beyond the city limits, especially in the Finger Lakes region.

Tucked away in Ithaca, the Finger Lakes is a tranquil paradise defined by its eleven stunning lakes, which, when viewed from above, resemble outstretched fingers. The longest of these is Lake Cayuga, with Lake Seneca following closely behind. These glacial lakes, formed during the last Ice Age, are the ultimate retreat for nature lovers seeking serenity, lake adventures, and scenic hikes.

During my quick weekend getaway to Ithaca over the 4th of July 2024, I was able to explore the best of this beautiful area. In this post, I’ll be sharing highlights of my 3-day trip to Ithaca and Seneca, including must-see spots, delicious food, and the best places to stay.

A Day-by-Day Travelogue

Day 1

Museum of the Earth

We set out from New Jersey at around 10 AM and reached Ithaca by 2 PM, ready to dive into our weekend adventure. Our first stop was downtown Ithaca for lunch, where you’ll find a variety of tempting dining options (more on that later in this post).

With our appetites satisfied, we headed to the Museum of the Earth, a must-visit for museum enthusiasts and paleontology lovers alike. This fascinating museum welcomes you with a towering 44-foot whale skeleton at the entrance and houses one of the most complete mastodon skeletons ever discovered. It’s a captivating spot to explore Earth’s history and marvel at its ancient treasures!

Taughannock Falls State Park

Our next stop on the Finger Lakes adventure was Taughannock Falls State Park, located along the stunning shores of Cayuga Lake, one of the largest lakes in the region. The entry fee was $10 per vehicle, granting access to a park that’s ideal for relaxation and fun. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a tranquil picnic by the lake, try some casual water sports, or simply unwind with loved ones, Taughannock Falls has something for everyone.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, head across the road to hike the Gorge Trail. This 1.5-mile round trip trail takes you to the base of the impressive Taughannock Falls, the tallest single-drop waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. The hike is relatively easy and offers sweeping views of the gorge, making it a perfect combination of activity and natural beauty. The falls themselves are truly a highlight of the Finger Lakes region, leaving visitors in awe of the surrounding splendor.

Day 2

Watkins Glen State Park

Today, we set out to explore the stunning Watkins Glen State Park, home to a mesmerizing gorge with 19 waterfalls and towering 200-foot cliffs. The park offers two main trails: the Rim Trail, which provides panoramic views of the gorge, and the Gorge Trail, which winds over and under the waterfalls, giving you a close-up view of these natural marvels. If you’re visiting, make sure to take the Gorge Trail for the best waterfall experience—it’s truly magical!

The entry fee to the park was $10 per vehicle, which included a helpful map provided at the entrance. However, we noticed that the trail markings could be improved, as many visitors, including us, found it a bit challenging to navigate the paths. Comfortable shoes are a must here, as some parts of the trail can get slippery near the waterfalls.

Overall, Watkins Glen left us spellbound with its natural beauty. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, photographer, or just looking to unwind amidst breathtaking scenery, this park is an absolute must-visit in the Finger Lakes region!

Glenora Wine Cellars

After an adventurous day at Watkins Glen, we sought some relaxation and a hearty meal. The area around the state park offers a variety of dining options, and we decided to try El Rancho, a Mexican restaurant. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite hit the mark in terms of service or food, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

With lunch sorted, you can spend the rest of the day exploring water activities or taking a scenic cruise on Seneca Lake—Captain Bill’s Cruises is a popular choice. We chose a different route and headed to Glenora Wine Cellars, one of the oldest wineries in the area, delighting wine lovers since 1977. No reservations are needed, just bring your ID, and you’re all set.

The experience began with us selecting six options from a list of nearly 30 wines, champagnes, and ciders. Each selection was poured for a tasting, letting us savor and decide on our favorite. Finally, we purchased a bottle of our chosen wine and enjoyed it on the deck, soaking in the picturesque views—a perfect way to unwind.

Day 3

Cornell University

Ithaca is home to the renowned Cornell University, making it a must-visit during your time in town. The campus offers plenty to explore, so plan to spend 3-4 hours taking in its highlights. Stroll through the serene Botanical Park, marvel at the Suspension Bridge, visit Beebe Lake, relax at Libe Slope, and wander along scenic trails that lead to breathtaking waterfalls.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss Collegetown Bagels—a local favorite. Treat yourself to their delicious, creatively crafted bagels and refreshing drinks, perfect for a relaxed brunch.

Myers Point Lighthouse

Our final stop of the trip—and one of my personal favorites—was the Myers Point Lighthouse. As a lighthouse enthusiast, this visit was a must for me. Built by dedicated volunteers in 1998, this charming lighthouse is located in Lansing, just a 20-minute drive from Ithaca.

The area around the lighthouse exudes a peaceful vibe, perfect for unwinding. The park offers amenities like a basketball court, a kids’ play area, and options for kayaking, making it a great spot for families and adventure seekers alike.

The highlight of our visit, however, was witnessing the most breathtaking sunset. The vibrant hues reflecting off the water created a magical end to our trip, leaving us with memories to cherish for a long time.

Day 4

Souvenir Shopping from Downtown Ithaca

Downtown Ithaca is brimming with charming souvenir and gift shops, perfect for picking up mementos of your visit. My husband and I have a tradition of collecting fridge magnets from every place we explore, and our collection has grown into a delightful showcase of our travels. During this trip, we added another magnet to our collection from Sunny Days of Ithaca.

We also visited the Handwork shop, a treasure trove of locally crafted items. There, we picked up a beautiful postcard and a set of handmade candles created by a local artisan, perfect as a thoughtful gift for a friend. It’s always special to bring home a piece of the place, especially when it supports local craftsmanship!

Where to stay in Finger lakes

We booked Hotel Ithaca, located in the heart of Downtown Ithaca, for our stay. This hotel offered great value with its excellent amenities, spacious rooms, and helpful staff. As a group of 6, we did explore Airbnb options, but they were quite pricey likely due to the holiday week.

The highlight of staying at Hotel Ithaca was its prime location. This made it easy to explore the surrounding Finger Lakes region. Within a 2-mile radius, we had access to numerous restaurants, souvenir shops, and gift stores. Plus, the hotel offered ample parking, a major convenience when exploring both the city and nearby Finger Lakes attractions.

Famous places to eat in/around Downtown Ithaca

  • Lev’s Kitchen – For a delicious Middle Eastern feast, Lev’s Kitchen is a must-visit. We tried their Malawach—a crispy, flaky flatbread that originated in Spain—and it was absolutely delicious. A great stop for a hearty, flavorful meal.
  • Liquid State Brewing Company/Silo Food Truck – Enjoy the satisfying combination of craft beer from Liquid State Brewing and tasty bites like mac & cheese, fried chicken, and sandwiches from the Silo Food Truck. A perfect spot for foodies and beer enthusiasts.
  • Paris Baguette – Indulge your sweet tooth at the world-famous Paris Baguette, where buttery pastries like pain au chocolat and cheesy croissant sandwiches set the tone for a perfect day. Pair it with aromatic coffee for the ultimate breakfast experience.
  • Purity Ice Cream Co. – Purity Ice Cream is an absolute gem! The flavors are unique and mouthwatering, making it a must-try for anyone visiting Ithaca. Even if you’re not a die-hard ice cream fan, this place might just win you over.
  • Tamarind – If you’re craving Thai food, head to Tamarind for a satisfying meal. The authentic dishes here are a great way to wrap up your day in Ithaca with some delicious flavors.

Wrapping up the journey

As our weekend trip to Ithaca and Seneca Lake came to an end, we couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences we packed into just a couple of days. From exploring the breathtaking Taughannock and Watkins Glen State Park and indulging in wine tasting at Glenora Wine Cellars to soaking in the serene vibes of Cornell University and shopping for unique souvenirs, this trip had the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and discovery.

The drive back to New Jersey was filled with conversations about our favorite moments, laughter over shared experiences, and a promise to return someday to uncover even more hidden gems of the Finger Lakes region.
