A Day-by-Day Travelogue
Day 1: Scenic Drive to Narkanda Himachal – A Summer Retreat
We started our Narkanda trip on the midnight of May 2018, renting a car from Gurgaon for the journey. The drive to Narkanda Himachal was nothing short of spectacular. En route, we were greeted by dark pine forests, breathtaking mountain views, enchanting meadows, and lush green valleys—everything you’d expect from an unforgettable summer escape to Narkanda, India.
However, the last stretch of the journey is not for the faint-hearted. The wide and smooth roads gradually narrow into winding mountain trails, weaving around ancient trees near the starting point of the Hatu Peak Narkanda trek. This section becomes challenging and thrilling, even for seasoned drivers. The road is so narrow that it can make anyone break a sweat, and driving through it at night is highly discouraged.
Adding to the adventure, mobile networks become patchy, making it nearly impossible to make calls or use GPS. It took us around 10 hours to cover the 460 km from Gurgaon to Narkanda Himachal and another 40 minutes for the final 6 km stretch. The journey, though demanding, offered an exhilarating introduction to the pristine beauty of places to visit in Narkanda.
Perfect stay at Agyaat Vaas, Narkanda
After some minor struggles with directions and weak network connectivity during our Narkanda trip, we finally reached Agyaat Vaas Narkanda, one of the most recommended accommodations in the area. This hotel in Narkanda took us completely by surprise. Nestled deep in the heart of the forest, the resort features rustic deluxe cottages with charming wooden fixtures and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and valleys. It truly fits the description of “a perfect retreat.”
We checked into our reserved cottages, freshened up, and headed straight to the dining area, where a steaming and delicious lunch awaited us. After savoring a hearty meal, we decided to unwind on the lush green patch of grass beside our cottages. The sun shone brightly, and as small gusts of wind brushed past, my skin shivered softly, creating a soothing rhythm between warmth and coolness. It felt like nature’s lullaby, lulling my mind into a serene, half-conscious state. The tranquil ambiance of Narkanda Himachal made it the perfect start to our adventure.

A peak in the history
While soaking in the afternoon sun at Agyaat Vaas Narkanda, one of the best stays in Narkanda Himachal, a resort staff member shared fascinating stories about the place. Beyond its breathtaking views, the resort’s name, “Agyaat Vaas,” holds historical significance rooted in the Mahabharata. It refers to the incognito year of the Pandavas’ exile, during which they assumed disguised roles in King Virata’s court. This connection adds a unique allure to the resort, making it an interesting highlight of any Narkanda trip.
“You’ll find many places near here associated with the Agyaat Vaas of the Pandavas,” the staff member shared, enriching our visit with intriguing details.
While Agyaat Vaas Narkanda impressed us with its charm, the limited network was a slight drawback. However, we saw it as a blessing in disguise—a chance to disconnect and embrace the tranquility of Narkanda India.
As night fell, the gentle chirps of insects created a soothing melody against the forest’s silence. We gathered around a bonfire, under a starlit sky and a silver crescent moon, soaking in a magical ambiance. Even in May, the nights were cold, making it essential to pack warm clothing. A pro tip: click all your fancy photos during the day, as the chill becomes noticeable post-sunset!
With its rich legends, scenic beauty, and rustic charm, Agyaat Vaas is a must-visit destination for anyone planning a Narkanda trip or looking for an unforgettable hotel at Narkanda experience.
Day 2 – Day of Wonders: Hatu Peak Trek and the Hidden Gem of Jorhaat
Hatu Mata Temple
he next morning, we set off excitedly to trek to Hatu Mata Temple, located atop the iconic Hatu Peak Narkanda, one of the most popular places to visit in Narkanda Himachal. Although we had already driven a significant portion of the route to reach our resort, the remaining 4 km trek to Hatu Peak was steep and uphill, making it a challenging yet rewarding adventure.
For those used to urban life, the climb can be demanding, but the breathtaking surroundings make it all worth the effort. With two experienced trekkers in our group, the ascent was a breeze for some, while others took their time adjusting to the rugged terrain. The trail, weaving through dense forests, apple orchards, and stunning views, felt like stepping into a nature lover’s paradise.
After about 45 minutes, we reached Hatu Mata Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali (as per local beliefs). The temple, perched near the peak, is an architectural marvel, crafted from wood with intricate carvings of Hindu deities. It’s surrounded by the rugged Himalayan ranges and the lush green Narkanda valleys, offering a panoramic view that left us awestruck.
A short walk from the temple led us to a fascinating natural formation known as “Bheem ka Chulha”, two massive rocks believed to have been used by the Pandavas during their Agyaat Vaas to cook meals. This touch of mythology added an air of intrigue to the pristine setting.
The trek to Hatu Peak Narkanda isn’t just about the destination—it’s a journey filled with scenic beauty and cultural significance, making it a must-add to any Narkanda trip.

Jorhaat
Our next stop after Hatu Peak Narkanda was the serene and untouched Jorhaat Valley, located about 1 km from the temple. This lush green valley is one of the hidden gems near Narkanda, known only to a few. Thanks to our guide, a local and a staff member of our resort, we got to experience this lesser-explored treasure.
The hike from Hatu Mata Temple to Jorhaat was an unforgettable experience. As we ventured into the dense pine forest, the sky all but disappeared, with only shards of blue breaking through the tall trees, forming a picturesque puzzle. The fragrance of fresh pine and the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy created a magical ambiance. The 30-minute hike was relatively easy, but frequent stops for impromptu photo sessions and our guide’s animated storytelling added to the adventure.
As we moved further, a sudden clearing revealed an endless carpet of green. The vibrant Jorhaat Valley stood in stark contrast to the surrounding dense forest. The valley seemed to be painted in shades of green and blue, with tall trees swaying gently in the wind at its periphery. A herd of buffalo grazing lazily completed the idyllic scene. It was so peaceful that simply lying on the grass allowed us to tune in to the rhythm of our breath.
Our guide shared an intriguing tale tied to Jorhaat’s history. According to local legend, during Agyaat Vaas, Bhim, in a fit of rage, uprooted every tree in this area, leaving behind this vast treeless stretch amidst the forest.
After soaking in the serenity of Jorhaat Valley, we hiked back to our resort in around 40-45 minutes. The staff enthusiastically suggested another trek to Karena Peak, but after an eventful day, we decided to relax and prepare for the next day’s journey.

Day 3 – The Bittersweet Goodbye to Narkanda
We started our final morning in Narkanda Himachal early. Packed our bags and said goodbye to the incredibly kind guide who had been our companion throughout this journey. By 7 AM, we were on the road, leaving the tranquil retreat of Agyaat Vaas Narkanda behind. However, a small hiccup awaited us. A traffic jam on the narrow trail leading to Narkanda delayed us by about an hour. Once past the congestion, we began our long drive back to Gurgaon, with our hearts full and our spirits light.
As we made our way back, I found myself grappling with a familiar feeling of ambivalence, one that seems to accompany the end of every memorable trip. It was bittersweet—on one hand, leaving behind such a beautiful place was disheartening; on the other, I felt enriched by the experiences we’d gathered. Exploring Hatu Peak Narkanda and the serene Jorhaat Valley had not only brought us closer to nature but also introduced us to the simplicity and warmth of life in the hills.
Travel Tip: If you’re planning a Narkanda trip, especially during the annual fair starting on last week of May, which draws villagers from far and wide to Hatu Mata Temple, consider scheduling your visit beforehand to avoid crowds.
Final Reflections on Narkanda Trip
Narkanda, with its pristine landscapes, hidden gems, and rich cultural history, left an indelible mark on my heart. This Narkanda trip was more than just a vacation. It was a reminder to pause, reflect, and appreciate the smaller joys in life.
For anyone planning a visit, I highly recommend exploring not just the well-known spots like Hatu Peak Narkanda, but also venturing into lesser-known areas like Jorhaat and Karena Peak. If you’re seeking a tranquil retreat, a stay at Agyaat Vaas Narkanda or a hotel in Narkanda offers a perfect blend of comfort and immersion in nature.
Though I returned home, I carried with me a treasure trove of memories, and a renewed sense of appreciation for the untouched beauty of Narkanda Himachal Pradesh. Until the next adventure calls, this trip will remain etched as a journey of discovery, serenity, and pure joy.
