The ultimate truth behind the Mount Batur trek experience

If you have read my Bali travel review, you already know our trip wasn’t just about beaches and sunsets — it was about slowing down, reconnecting, and saying yes to experiences we’d been putting off for years. I visited Bali in October 2025 with my college friend, her little one, and my husband, and somewhere between café hopping and chasing waterfalls, my husband and I decided to squeeze in one big adventure — the Mount Batur sunrise trek. We’d heard so much about the surreal sunrise from this active volcano that we knew we had to see it for ourselves.

About Mount Batur

Mount Batur is an active volcano located in the Kintamani region of Bali, about a 1.5–2-hour drive from Ubud. Standing tall at 1,717 meters (5,633 ft) above sea level, it’s one of Bali’s most popular trekking destinations — especially for its stunning sunrise views over Mount Agung and Lake Batur.

Trek timings & wake-up call

To catch the sunrise from the summit, you’ll have to start early — very early!
We woke up around 1:30 AM in Ubud, got ready, and were picked up by our tour driver around 2 AM. After a bumpy but scenic drive through the dark Balinese countryside, we reached the starting point at Toya Bungkah village around 3:30–3:45 AM.

By 4 AM, with our flashlights in hand, we began the climb.

The trek experience

There’s something magical about trekking in the dark. The only light around us came from our flashlights and the tiny glimmers from dozens of other trekkers ahead — forming a glowing trail up the volcano’s slope. It was both exhilarating and slightly eerie, watching that line of moving lights snake its way toward the sky.

The first part of the trail was surprisingly smooth — a proper paved road from the parking area for about a kilometer. But soon after, it turned into a true volcanic path — steep, rocky, and full of loose gravel. Every few steps, we could feel the crunch beneath our shoes. Our guide kept a steady pace, occasionally checking in with a soft “you okay?” as the climb grew steeper.

Halfway up, we paused for a breather — and that’s when we turned around and saw the world below us glowing faintly under the moonlight. The air was crisp, and the excitement of what lay ahead kept us going. As we neared the top, the faint orange hues of sunrise started appearing on the horizon, slowly revealing the surrounding peaks. The higher we went, the prettier it got — the dark silhouettes of Mount Agung and Lake Batur gradually came into view, making every step worth it.

We finally reached the summit around 5:30–5:45 AM, just as the first light broke through the clouds.

Do you need a guide?

While it’s technically possible to hike on your own, I highly recommend going with a guide.
Guides know the trail well (which is pitch dark at night) and ensure safety on tricky slopes. Most organized tours include local guides who carry flashlights, water, and sometimes even blankets for the summit chill.

We booked our trek through a local tour operator in Ubud, and everything — from hotel pickup to breakfast — was taken care of.

Cost & inclusions

A typical Mount Batur sunrise trek package costs between IDR 400,000–700,000 per person (USD 25–45) depending on what’s included. Most packages cover:

  • Hotel pick-up and drop (usually from Ubud, Kuta, or Seminyak)
  • Licensed local guide
  • Flashlights or headlamps
  • Drinking water
  • Light breakfast at the summit – boiled eggs cooked using volcanic steam, bananas, and coffee/tea

If you opt for a private tour or combine it with hot spring visits or coffee plantation stops, the cost may go up slightly.

Things to carry

  • Sweatshirt or light jacket – It gets cold and windy at the top before sunrise
  • Flashlight or headlamp – Essential for the pitch-dark climb
  • Good trekking shoes – The trail is gravelly and slippery in parts
  • Water bottle – Stay hydrated, especially on the descent
  • Camera or phone – The sunrise views are worth capturing
  • Light snacks – In case you get hungry before the summit breakfast

Difficulty level

I’d rate the trek as moderate — manageable for anyone with basic fitness, but it does get tiring due to the steep sections and the early start.
The descent can also be tricky because of loose stones, so take it slow.

At the summit

At the top, we were welcomed by the warm smiles of fellow trekkers, the smell of coffee, and the most peaceful sunrise view.
Our guides served us a simple breakfast — bananas, boiled eggs, and hot tea, all while monkeys roamed around looking for treats!

The views from the summit stretch across Mount Abang, Mount Agung, and sometimes even Mount Rinjani (Lombok) on clear days.

My honest take on Mount Batur

We absolutely loved the experience — the sense of accomplishment, the views, and the serenity at dawn. Having done multiple hikes in the US with breathtaking panoramas, I’ll admit that Mount Batur’s views weren’t the most spectacular we’ve seen — but the overall adventure was unforgettable.

It does get a bit hectic due to the midnight wake-up and steep climb, but if you love trekking and sunrises, this is one experience you shouldn’t miss in Bali.

Final tip

If you’re visiting Bali and enjoy a good adventure, add Mount Batur Sunrise Trek to your itinerary. Just plan it early in your trip (so you’re not too tired later), wear sturdy shoes, and let the Balinese sunrise reward your efforts!
